A root canal treatment is necessary if you want to preserve a tooth whose pulp has died or whose pulp is irreversibly inflamed. The only way to preserve the diseased tooth is then a root canal treatment.

In this treatment, the tooth is cleaned from the inside by removing the diseased tissue and killing existing bacteria. After the cleaning has been carried out, all cavities are refilled to give the tooth new support and strength. There are a wide variety of techniques and materials. It is only important that the cavities are absolutely tightly closed, so that no bacteria can penetrate.

Through improved methods, the chances of success in preserving the tooth in the long term are 85% in normal cases. A root canal treatment is not recommended if the tooth is already too loosened, the root canals are very narrow and curved or the root tips protrude into the maxillary sinus.
